    1. Introduction

The Consulting Laboratory for Haemophilus influenzae (KLHi) has been assigned the laboratory surveillance of invasive H. influenzae diseases in Germany by the Robert Koch Institute. Its tasks include serotyping of clinical isolates and the detection of ß-lactamase production. In 2011 submissions from 248 patients were analysed. As has been observed in previous years (e.g. 2008, cf. Robert Koch Institute, Epidemiologisches Bulletin 35/2009) the age group most affected by invasive H. influenzae disease is > 40 years (189 cases, 81.1 %).

In 234 of the submitted cases, H. influenzae was isolated from primarily sterile materials (this figure equals the number of invasive diseases).

The vast majority of the isolates consisted of non-typeable H. influenzae (NTHi, 183 cases, 78.2 %), followed by Hif as the most frequent capsular serotype (37 cases; 15.8 %). Hib showed third highest frequency among the serotypes (7 cases; 3.0 %), closely followed by Hie (6 cases, 2.6 %) and only one case of Hia (0.4 %) was detected. Serotypes c and d were not found.

The KLHi analyzed the frequency of ampicillin resistance of invasive isolates. In 2011, ampicillin E-tests were carried out in the 233 vital isolates submitted to the KLHi (in one case, only DNA was available). In 14.6 % (34 isolates) of the clinical isolates a MIC > 1 µg/ml was detected, and the majority of these strains (27 isolates, 79.4% of ampicillin-resistant strains, 11.6% of all isolates) showed ß-lactamase production.
